About
About When the Buddha met Bubba
This is the heart-warming story of Billy Bob (Bubba) Coker, a redneck who reached rock bottom, until a freak head injury results in the appearance of his own personal Buddha. From that moment forward, Bubba is led on a humorous journey of introspection through the backwoods of the deep South and through his own flawed preconceptions and relationships.
A message from the author
I want to thank you in advance for taking time to read first 3 chapters of my new novel:When the Buddha Met Bubba.
While I know some will not be interested in this less than sophisticated spiritual comedy, I trust most of you will. It is a leap for me to be sure but like the poet Marvin Bell says, "Have a lot of nerve. Fall down big, make a big splash. Why not?"
The first 3 chapters are available for free as an e-book here. Basically, it's an Adobe PDF file which can be read by the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Most of you already have it on your computer, but if you don't, you can download it for free at Adobe's website.
When The Buddha Met Bubba is a book that will change lives (I hope) in unexpected ways. It is about spiritual growth and faith. Simultaneously it is a romp through my home state of Alabama, which is known here in the South to be “The Heart of Dixie.” This whimsical, fantasy deals with the integrity and surrender that comes when one redneck, but likeable character, Bubba, meets his magical mentor, Pu Tai, as they set off on a journey. It has at its center a love story between a man and a woman and the devotion of a beautiful gay couple. Throw in the struggle to heal a father-son wound, prejudice, and bigotry and add a little humor and with true Buddhist/Christian compassion and you end up with a novel that is not only different but just plain fun. I hope you will give it a try and enjoy the light that it tries to shed on the human condition.
About Richard "Dixie" Hartwell
I was born in the foothills of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and raised in a small town called Cottonville, Alabama. When my momma and daddy were mad at me they yelled, “Dick C. Hartwell, come here!” Everyone thought they were saying Dixie so it stuck.
I’m a writer and retired college professor, but currently I’m a redneck, rogue psychologist. I got my Masters degree at Piedmont State in Animal Husbandry and my Doctorate in Human Psychology at Black Warrior College right outside of Demopolis.
I’ve written articles for all kinds of magazines like The Cotton
Monthly, Fish and Deer Magazine, Bird Seed Quarterly and some
scholarly journals. You can read or download the first 3 chapters of my first novel for free, When the Buddha Met
Bubba, in its entirety. I hope ya’ll enjoy it
and let me know if you want to read more since there’s nothing good on
television these days anyway.
I’ll also be posting some comments on a variety of issues that I ponder and ruminate on with a few suggestions thrown in for good measure.
Take care,
Richard "Dixie" Hartwell
